Electronics and our Lives
From the early 50’s
electronics have been driving consumption in America, from the bulky television
set to the latest smartphone. As consumers in America we have seen large
changes in personal electronics and the way we use them. During this consumer
change we see it occurring through the whole house. This consumer change also
brought a rise in individualism in and out of the house-hold. This jump in
consumption was prevalent in Boomer America were electronics were first
produced on a large scale. The product that sort of started it all was the T.V
which kicked out product growth in many different areas of industry. We as
consumers today don’t realize the mass abundance of product we have at are
finger tips. When RCA released there T.V set in the late 40’s
only 60,000
households had them, compared that to 114.7 million in 2012. These numbers can
be seen across a lot of other electronics throughout the past 60 years. When I
think about how electronics have changed over the years I have started using
them I found this pictures that sums it all up. When I look at this I see how far we have come in such a short time, electronics have really driven consumers to branch out on an individual scale but still be connected with a click of a button.
The last picture that you used was great! You were right, it totally sums up everything. Every electronic item in the top of that picture is just now in the palm of my hand. I can search the internet while watching my favorite show just with the push of a button.
ReplyDeleteIt's scary and at the same time it's reliving.
I agree we have come a great distance in a short amount of time when it comes to technology. I remember seeing a picture of the first computer which took up the space of an entire room and was considered extremely high tech. Now we have technology that not only would put these old computers to shame, but also fits in the palm of our hand rather than take up an entire room. This new technology we have definitely gives the consumer a lot more access to goods and services as compared to the past.
ReplyDeleteThe pictures you used are interesting because it also shows how people have changed. Of course we, as consumers, are going to purchase the gadgets and electronics that fit our needs. The first picture showing a family sitting around the T.V. makes the technology seem domesticated and a hobby the family may take part in together. The second picture showing that all these pieces of equipment can fit into one little gadget tells me that electronics have become much more personalized, and more of an individualistic experience.
ReplyDeleteGreat choice of picture! Technology has changed drastically since the 90's and that picture just about sums it up. With the revolutionizing of our technology, it only makes sense that our consumer habits would change along with it. We can now order pizza from our phone, we can have conversations with our phone, 3D printing is available, Google Glass is making its way onto the scene. Technology and electronics as a whole are becoming more diverse and expansive and are allowing us as the consumers to consume more readily and more easily. Technology is by no means helping our culture in attempting to wean ourselves off of our addiction to them, though. However, it only makes sense that with advancements in science and robotics that we'd be capable of what we are today. As technologies advance, so do our consuming habits; however, it is good to see life becoming more on-the-go because it allows for people to focus on other parts of their daily lives. Yes, it it expensive and everywhere, but it's the now and it is definitely staying around and will continue to keep evolving. I guess we all just have to adjust along with it. And besides, who wouldn't want every single device in their phone, rather than carrying several bulky items?
